October is a new season of celebration, welcoming fall with grand events and gatherings. When the world is drenched in the colors of foliage, New Mexico is all set to host the world’s largest balloon festival, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Starting from the 5th of October, 2024, to the 13th of October, 2024, the sky of New Mexico will be covered with big, colorful hot balloons soaring to new horizons.
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a 9-day festival that hosts multiple events for public entertainment. More than 500 balloons take off simultaneously, ruling the sky with their magnificent size and hues. Witnessing the sunset and the sunrise high from the sky is something no one wants to miss.
Why is the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta celebrated?
The first Albuquerque International Balloon Festival was organized in 1972. Around 13 hot air balloons were gathered in the parking lot of Coronado Center Mall in Albuquerque. Around 10,000 people were there as the audience to witness the first balloon fiesta. But how has it started?
It was when Susan Johnson, the promotional director for KOB radio station, thought of celebrating the station's 50th anniversary with a balloon Fiesta. Sid Cutter, who had flown the "club" balloon purchased by the Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association, was chosen to fly the balloon. With limited time and enthusiasm, Sid Cutter, Don, Mike Draper, and Tom Rutherford of KOB organized the largest balloon race in the world, inviting 21 balloons. Despite last-minute cancellations and a storm, the event attracted 10,000–20,000 spectators.
In 2000, more than 1000 balloons were registered; however, due to limited space, the number of balloons was then limited to 500-600. Balloon Fiesta Park was also announced as the venue for the festival.
What to Expect for Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta 2024?
Ballon flight starts with the sun rising, and as the sunset sets, all these huge balloons rest on the field, preparing for the next day’s ride. But before that, the balloon glow event steals the sight of the spectators. As fascinating as the site is, it also gives enthusiasts a chance to talk with the pilots and the crew.
This year, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta 2024 has announced a new event for students and teachers. The Education Connection will not only involve more participants but also educate them about the science behind ballooning. If you are keen to discover how the hot air balloon mechanism works, this can be an opportunity for you. Interactive sessions and a special Balloon Discovery Center will also be there to engage more students.
