Ranking among the best airlines in the world and number one in passenger volume, American Airlines has again taken a redefining step. The airline is moving away from relying on partner airlines like British Airways and is building its own direct network to secondary cities in Europe. The transition will cater to the premium leisure travelers and the Hungarian diaspora, while also offering the only nonstop service to Budapest.

American Airlines was founded on April 15, 1926, about 99 years ago. American Airlines operates over 6,700 daily flights to approximately 350 destinations in more than 50 countries. American Airlines operates Airbus and Boeing narrow-body aircraft, as well as Boeing wide-body aircraft. The airline has deployed over 1,000 aircraft, scheduled to serve destinations across the US and worldwide. Like numerous other airlines, American is taking steps to expand its network to match demand and passenger requirements and achieve efficient operations.

Read along to learn more about the new networks American is actively developing and those that will resume in 2026.

American Airlines - Six for 2026
American Airlines has made a multifaceted strategic move that benefits a distinct group of travelers. This execution is a significant transatlantic expansion primarily for the Summer 2026 season that will connect Central European cities, including Budapest, Hungary; Prague, Czech Republic; Athens, Greece; Milan, Italy; and Zurich, Switzerland. While these destinations in Central Europe will have improved global connectivity, four U.S. hub cities, Philadelphia International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and Miami International Airport, will also benefit from increased international traffic and infrastructural investments. By expanding its services to dedicated destinations, American has made its mark by offering nonstop flights to Central Europe.

From all six of the 2026 routes, five routes originate from Philadelphia, while one single route originates from Dallas/Fort Worth. Therefore, Philadelphia is the main hub driving American Airlines' expansion, positioning it as America’s leisure gateway to Europe.
