Traditionally, Trois-Rivieres was referred to in English as Three Rivers, although in more recent decades it has been referred to as Trois-Rivieres in both English and French. Historically, it was an important center of commerce, trade, and population. The city is famous for hosting many festivals including the Festival International de la Poesie – an international poetry festival, MetalFest de Trois-Rivieres, and Festival International Dance Encore every November. In 2009, it was designated as the 2009 Cultural capital of Canada for cities with the population of 125,000 or more.
